The Vivacious valley of Hamta
Hampta Pass, the most iconic trail of Inderkilla National
Park is located in Himachal Pradesh which connects the valleys of Kullu and
Lahaul.
The trail starts from a small beautiful Tibetan settlement village called
Sethan. The area is also home to a project constructed on the Allain and
Duhangan Nallah.
The lively valley which sees frequent local weather systems or rain-spells
makes trail full of some eye-catching sights. One gets to walk through Lush
green meadows, high soaring cliffs, numerous waterfalls, small streams as the
trail takes you up the Allain Nallah, coming from the glaciers around the pass.
Along with the natural beauty, you will also see huge flocks of sheep and other
cattle as this is an old Shepard trail.
Gujjar settlements can also be seen as they come each summer with their
livestock for to graze on the abundant grass.
The valley is also home to wild animals such as pika, ibex, black/brown bears
and over 200 species of birds, such as Kalij pheasant, Monal and Himalayan griffons
( Vultures) which can be seen circling high up in the sky and at times they can be seen feasting on a deceased animal. An amazing opportunity for
photography enthusiasts.
The trail from the road head leads you through mixed forests of pine, oak,
maple and other trees as you lay your eyes upon the vast grasslands early on
itself.
You walk along side the allain nallah ( Hampta nallah) until you reach chikka
which is one of the most picturesque campsites nestled next to a roaring
waterfall.
The trail then turns right into the valley where you will encounter a river
crossing in ice cold water, an enthralling experience!
Here onwards the valley starts becoming narrower as you walk up to 'Balu ka
ghera' and you witness a steep incline all the way up to the pass.
The views on this trail are so very unpredictable and are bound to leave you
speechless at every campsite.
After crossing the pass, as you enter the Lahaul valley, you will witness a
complete change in the terrain.
If you have Chandratal included in the itinerary, it is a sight for sore eyes.
The 'Moon Lake' is a glacial lake located on the "samudri tapu
plateau" fed by the glaciers of river Chandra at an altitude of 4250
meters.
A visit to this magical lake is like icing on cake which not everybody gets to
witness due to extreme weather systems prevailing in the region.
